nº 05: ovate s/s14

These tintype photographs by April Lea for Ovate present such a beautiful bleakness. What is tintype photography? It was invented in 1856, and was a cheap form of early instant photography. They are, as the name implies, photos with the image on a metal surface rather than on glass or paper. The metal would be enamelled in black, which allows the collodion negative to be viewed as a positive image against the dark background...

Once again, I want everything in the new Ovate collection... I also want to play around with tintype photography now. Wonder if they used potassium cyanide as the fixer for this set? Probably not... be pretty hardcore if they did, though.
